Vegan Protein Powders [Part 2] – Drinking it with water
So I have been consuming 3 different kinds of vegan/plant based protein powders this week. Let me sum it up. Compared to whey isolate powder, vegan based protein powders:
- have chalky texture
- taste very natural
- are more impure it is (with flavouring), the more fat and carbs it contains
I want to go through each point in details:
1. Chalky texture
Because they are not micro-refined particles like whey isolate powders, which have gone through a complex chemical process, you can feel the grainy texture as it passes through your oesophagus, if you just drink it with water. It gets stuck inside so you do need to wash it down.
(1) ACCEPT IT and just get used to it. This is what I opted to do. Because sometimes I just want to fuel myself with 25g of protein with traces of fat and carbs. This means, I cannot mix with nut milk (high in fat) nor fruits (high in sugar/carb).
(2) If you have no macro restriction like I do, then best options are to mix it with something smoother so that the grainy texture will be unnoticeable. This means you can best take it as smoothies, mixing it with yogurt, banana, fruits etc, OR mix it with cereals, granola, yogurt, that kind of things.
But ask yourselves – what do you want to achieve? Do you want to get strong? Do you want to lose weight quicker? Then don’t be a xxxxx and start adding all these things! You can swallow it before you know it. It may not be the most delicious thing in the world, but you just have to get over it, that’s it.
This one is ORAC-Energy Protein & Greens by Paradise Herbs. I find this perfect for my post-workout shake. On my weightlifting day, I mix it with fruit/veggie juice, which is very nice (make it up to Protein 20g, carbs 50g). On my cardio day, I just take it straight with water, I just add some apple cider vinegar, and just drink it (Protein 25g only, sure this has a bit of carbs but very small amount). It is actually good, I like it. It is not so chalky as the other powders since it is mixed with lots of greens.
My favorite one so far – EPIC Protein powder by Sprout Living. So here I have the chocolate maca flavor. Chalky, but once you get used to it, it is also fine to take it only with water. Very natural taste, I really like it. The vanilla lucuma flavor is also delicious! Same texture though. When you think of how my whey powder with the artificial vanilla flavor tasted…. yikes!!! Such a fake, disgusting taste!
2. Natural taste
If you are used to artificial flavors, then you may want to add all kinds of things so that you can actually TASTE these things. Forget it. Just get used to it! This is how natural tastes like! Having said that, the chocolate maca flavor by Epic Protein could be stronger, I added raw cocoa powder and it tasted a lot more intensive and was very enjoyable. Vanilla can be also enhanced by actually adding some vanilla from fresh vanilla or add some essence…. Sweetness is perfect for me, but for many, it may not be enough. Then I would suggest getting the original flavor and mix it in fruit/veggie juice.
I think it is pointless to buy flavored one. Why not add flavors by yourself? So easy! The original flavor of Epic Protein (32g/serving) has:
- 26g of protein, 1.5g of fat, 4g of carbs
If you choose the vanilla for example, the same serving contains:
- 19g of protein, 1.5g of fat, 8g of carbs
Because it has all the ‘natural’ ingredients for the sweet vanilla like flavors, which all adds up to higher carbs.
I buy protein powder to get protein, not carbs. So, I would just continue with Epic Protein original flavor, and I would use vanilla pods if I want to flavored it vanilla, OR simply add cocoa powder to make it tastes more chocolate like.
DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY IN THESE FLAVORS! NOT WORTH IT!!!
