Why I started this blog
To be honest, I hate social media. I just don’t have time to fake like silly posts and post comments. With limited time available in your life, it is just pointless to be in the loop of everyone’s life. I’ve been posting my food related pics in Instagram for a while, but obviously it is all about images and I cannot put lots of contents on them. I think with blogs, I can discuss things more openly without caring how many likes I may get. I just want to log my experience and share it with those with similar interests. I know that I am not the only one!
Here is my background info leading to writing this blog:
I had an overhaul of my lifestyle in August 2014, when I realized how comfortable life made me lazy in Thailand. Well, the fact was, someone took a picture of me in a garden from behind, and I was like, who is this fat woman here!? I just couldn’t believe it was actually me in there. I just felt grossed out! This country has the most amazing food – fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood, etc. I love all the spices they use in Thai food! Somehow I stopped doing exercises and by the time I realized, I was getting pretty chubby.
Enough of self-pity – the critical point was, my chronic lower back pain was getting worse and it was getting unbearable. Doctors just wanted to medicate me. My migraines and headaches were getting worse. I could see that if I did not do an intervention, I would probably drop dead the next several years. I wasn’t ready to be buried just yet.
So I started off with swimming. Pathetic I was, I couldn’t even swim continuously for 5 minutes. As I kid, I was so athletic, I even won junior National Aikido champion in Japan twice, appearing in a TV commercial being an athletic hero. What the hell happened.
A friend of me told me about 100 push up challenge. So that’s what I started next. I could only do it with knees on the floor. Pathetic! From the same website, I could see that they had other 100 whatever challenges. So I did plank, sit-ups, dips, you name it. Slowly, I was getting a hang of it. Then I realized, I also had a treadmill upstairs which I never used since I bought it 4 years ago. I started jogging slowly. Then it became half an hour, then an hour, I became a fat burning machine.
I think this was the time I started using myfitnesspal.com so that I could start logging my food. I had no idea of calories and stuff. I was just curious how it works and how long I could do this, since I am not exactly the most patient person. Through people I met, I learnt a lot… there are tons of weirdos and horny guys, but I have a group of people I exchange my opinions with, and they have supported me throughout this journey.
Low protein intake was my problem. My mother was always saying, eat lots of vegetable and fruits. I’ve been doing that. But my protein intake turned out to be something like 20-30g a day! Waaaaaaaay too low! At that time my fitness routine purely consisted of running on a treadmill and I was getting very lean, but then few people advised me the importance of building muscles to gain strength. One of them says to me: “imagine, you will be burning fat so efficiently without doing anything.” That just sounded so perfect.
I had a couple of dumbbells at home so I started watching videos of Fitness Blender in YouTube – this was the start of strength workouts. Mostly with bodyweight though. Later on I started adding more and more. At one point, some bodybuilding guy told me, well, there is so much you can do with dumbbells. With a barbell, you can DRAMATICALLY improve your performance! I loved the choice of his word. Dramatically sounds just right.
So when I moved to the new house, we decided to kill one guest room and made that into a fitness room. And! I bought a Power Cage and Olympic barbell! YAY!
I had no personal trainer so YouTube became my best friend. Amazing how much information is available! I needed a program so I started with strong lift 5×5. Basically you do 5 sets of 5 rep in back squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press and barbel rows. You were supposed to do it 3 times a week, and you should add 5 lbs every session.
It was OK but then when it gets to your plateau, you just feel stuck. I felt a bit alone and scared, since I got squashed under the barbell while doing a bench press. There was a drunk guy in the UK who actually died from this!
Anyways, I was also not so sure how much I should eat. So I wanted to try with a bit of ‘bulking’. I increased my daily calorie intake to something like 2500 kcal. It was heavenly. I was eating all the time. Lots of protein. Lots of egg white, Greek yoghurt, lean seafood, steak, etc. But I was just not sure whether I was doing the right thing…..
I started doing Freeletics around this time. This is an app started in Germany, it has one of the best fitness community with very committed users. You can only post when you achieve, so unless myfitnesspal.com, you don’t have your feed contaminated by pity remarks and irrelevant crap nobody wants to know of. I loved doing their workouts (HIIT and individual exercises) but the problem was, things like burps and sit-ups were messing up my lower back again.
This was the point where I asked myself: what the hell do you want from all this? To be very very honest – after being so chubby all this year, I wanted to have the most amazing physique I have never had. And lately I find those bikini fitness models super attractive, so I said to myself…. why do I have to do to get that body? I didn’t know that there were bikini prep coaches around who train girls specifically for such physiques. That sounded fantastic, so I got myself an online coach, and there she sent me a weekly meal plan and fitness routine (6 times a week). Yippee!!!
Her meal plan consists of 7 meals/snacks a day with macro cycling. Breakfast was always with 6 egg whites. I need to consume protein throughout the day but never more than 35g. It was ok, but I didn’t want to solely rely on my whey protein powder. Few weeks passed by, then I had an annual health check. This year, I also wanted to test my food intolerance, because I knew that there were certain things I shouldn’t be eating. In 2016, I wanted to be absolutely healthy so excluding such food was essential for me. The test included over 200 food, testing for IgG…
The results came on Xmas day, 2015. I was strongly intolerant to wheat, all dairy products, cashew nuts, and EGG WHITES! Who can I take lean protein without egg whites! and without non-fat yoghurt!!!!
Ever since, I’ve been experimenting with recipes which exclude these types of food while keeping them lean and high in protein. In this blog, I want to post my experience with this change, and how I continue with my fitness journey….
