Skinny bullet proof coffee
Before tested dairy intolerant, I was a Starbucks addict. In general I always needed to have a cup of iced coffee in my hand, AND I was so hooked on Coke Zero. But something happened!
But in November when I visited my parents in Japan, my mother gave me a book “The Bulletproof Diet” by Dave Asprey. She tried to explain to me what it is about in fragments but it sounded so complicated so I decided to read it – I read the whole book in a day, it was that fascinating.
I won’t go into details about his book here but there many eye opening facts and theories, which I continue to research further. I was fascinated to read about his famous bulletproof coffee. It is a blended drink made of special toxin-feee coffee, grass fed butter and MCT oil from coconut. It is said to give you a “massive impact on cognitive function” – sounds already amazing doesn’t it?
His original recipe consist of a cup of coffee, 1-2 tablespoon of MCT oil, 1-2 tablespoon of grass-fed, unsalted butter or ghee. It is supposed to give you boundless energy and focus, and you will feel “full” the whole morning, without eating anything that morning!
I started it with half a teaspoon of ghee and a teaspoon of MCT oil to begin with. It gave me such a boost, I was immediately satisfied and felt so good!!! In this recipe, you don’t add milk at all. In fact, ghee does the trick. By blending it with coffee, it makes it very creamy so there is really no need to add any more cream or milk to it.
So two cups a day – this is how I started. And you know what, I really lost craving to drink other kinds of coffee anymore. Plus Coke Zero – my body didn’t need it anymore!
But the problem is this: I am on a low fat diet – my coach would kill me!!! She was fine with MCT oil because it is immediately used as energy, not stored as fat. So I decided to exclude ghee from my coffee. Sure it doesn’t taste so good but I can cope with that!!!!
MCT stands for medium chain triglyceride. There are four kinds found in coconut oil and there are three which are essential to our body. Caprylic Acid for example, consists of 6% of coconut oil, has potent anti-microbial properties and good for your healthy gut, and it gets metabolized in the brain very quickly. It doesn’t have to be processed in your liver, instead, it will be turned into energy in 3 steps, while sugar takes 26 steps. This is why bulletproof coffee suppresses cravings and boosts your cognitive power.
I use the MCT oil powder from Japan, because it was easier for me to carry. I cook rice with it, it has no taste and it is pretty dry. You can put it in soup, it is a very versatile oil to be included in your diets. Oh, you cannot fry things with it!
Apart from giving me lots of erergy during the day, it is said that MCT oil improves the sleep quality as well. If you fill your body up with good fats like this before going to bed, it helps with craving and reduces bloody sugar swings. Dave Asprey recommends to take raw honey as well as, so that your brain will have both glucose and ketones to be fed to your brain while you sleep. Since I started taking this, I really do feel that I have deeper sleep, and I wake up with such a clear head, which I never had before.
I don’t follow his diet by the way. I still need my carbs in the morning before my intensive workouts. But I love the bulletproof coffee and MCT oil. It is definitely the best thing which happened to me. My man loves it, too – he takes ghee and MCT oil. He lost some weight, because he really stopped having cravings for junks and sweet treats! Really great stuff.
